Symptoms of eczema

Eczema commonly presents with dry, red and itchy patches of skin. The itch is often the most distressing symptom and can lead to scratching, skin breakdown and secondary infection. The condition may affect different areas of the body depending on age and severity, commonly involving the face, neck, flexural areas of the arms and legs, and hands. Flare-ups may be triggered by environmental factors, irritants, infections, stress or changes in temperature and humidity.

Causes and contributing factors

Eczema is a complex condition involving skin barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation and environmental triggers.

Management of eczema

Management focuses on restoring and maintaining the skin barrier, controlling inflammation and reducing itch. Treatment plans are individualised and may include topical therapies, moisturisation strategies and flare management plans. Education on skin care routines, trigger avoidance and early treatment of flares is an important part of long-term control. In moderate to severe eczema, specialist therapies may be considered, including biologic treatment such as dupilumab, which targets key inflammatory pathways involved in atopic dermatitis and can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life in suitable patients.
