Allergy Testing and Skin Prick Testing
At Queensland Allergy & Immunology Clinic, we provide comprehensive allergy testing to help diagnose the cause of your allergic symptoms. Skin prick testing is one of the most common and effective methods used to identify specific environmental and food allergens.
What is Skin Prick Testing?
Skin prick testing is a diagnostic procedure that involves exposing your skin to small amounts of suspected allergens. The test is performed on the forearm or the back and is quick, safe, and generally well-tolerated.
How is Skin Prick Testing Performed?
- Preparation: Your skin will be cleaned, and then small drops of liquid containing common allergens (e.g., pollens, dust mites, animal dander, certain foods) are placed on the surface of your skin.
- Pricking: A sterile lancet or needle is used to gently prick through each drop of allergen, allowing a tiny amount to enter the top layer of your skin.
- Observation: You will then wait for approximately 15-20 minutes while we observe your skin for any reactions.
- Interpretation: If you are allergic to a particular substance, a small, raised, itchy bump (called a wheal) will appear at the site where that allergen was applied. The size of the wheal indicates the degree of your sensitivity. A control solution (histamine) is also used to ensure the test is working correctly, and a negative control (saline) is used to ensure no reaction occurs with the procedure itself.
What Allergens Can Be Tested?
We can test for a wide range of allergens, including:
Environmental allergens:
- Grass pollen
- Weed pollen
- Tree pollen
- Moulds
- House dust mites
- Animal danders (e.g., cat, dog)
Food allergens:
- Peanut
- Tree nuts (e.g., almond, cashew)
- Egg
- Milk
- Wheat
- Soy
- Fish
- Shellfish
What are the Benefits of Skin Prick Testing?
- Accurate Diagnosis: Helps pinpoint the specific allergens causing your symptoms.
- Guidance for Treatment: Provides essential information for developing an effective management plan, including allergen avoidance and potential immunotherapy.
- Quick Results: The results are usually available within minutes.
- Safe and Well-Tolerated: Generally safe for most individuals when performed by trained professionals.
Who Should Consider Allergy Testing?
Allergy testing may be recommended if you experience symptoms suggestive of allergy, such as:
- Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
- Asthma triggered by allergens
- Pollen food syndrome (oral allergy syndrome)
- Food allergy symptoms
- Insect sting reactions
Preparation for Skin Prick Testing
To ensure the accuracy of the test, you may be asked to avoid certain medications, such as antihistamines, for a specified period before your appointment. Your doctor will provide specific instructions.
